Leadership is an influence process and this session discusses the elements of successful leadership. A good leader adapts his or her management style to the goal to be achieved and the commitment and abilities of the staff member attempting to achieve the goal.

Learning objectives of this session:
- Defining leadership as an influence process to help others reach their goals and the goals of the organization;
- Identifying the elements of goal success;
- Identifying the fundamental stages of acquiring a new skill;
- Identifying leadership behaviors;
- identifying leadership styles and when to best use them;
- Through the assessment, identify each individual's preferred leadership style and level of flexibility.

Successful leaders also energize and motivate teams. This session identifies the tools and elements of motivation and the role of the leader in fostering a culture that nurtures engagement, development, and achievement.

This portion of the session will:
- Explore how the goal-setting process fuels discretionary effort;
- Describe the frameworks of motivation; and
- Identify a leader's incentive inventory and when/how to use them.
