AFP-Greater Philadelphia Chapter Mentoring Program

As stated in the AFP Code of Ethical Principles, “The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) exists to foster the development and growth of fundraising professionals and the profession, to promote high ethical standards in the fundraising profession and to preserve and enhance philanthropy and volunteerism.” AFP-GPC’s Mentoring Program offers less experienced fundraisers the opportunity to benefit from the advice, counsel, and guidance of more senior fundraising professionals.

The Mentoring Program Committee serves several roles. The Committee:

  • Pairs mentors and mentees who work in similar disciplines and share interests in specific fundraising skills.

  • Provides ongoing support for the efforts of the partnerships to achieve their goals including phone consults, face to face meetings and troubleshooting.

  • Is responsible for completion and analysis of the progress reports.

Mentoring Partnerships
To qualify to become a mentor or mentee, each prospective participant must complete and submit the requested paperwork. The Mentoring Program Committee makes every effort to match mentors and mentees based on the areas of interest and expertise listed on their applications. Two sessions are available: Fall (approximately November through May), Spring (Approximately May through June)

Criteria for Mentors include:

  • A minimum of 5 years fundraising experience and/or CFRE status

  • Completion of the Mentor Application and submission of a resume

  • Ability to give at least 2 hours per month (on average / estimate) to the program

  • Completion of required evaluations forms

Criteria for Mentees include:

  • Membership in the AFP

  • Identifiable skill or area of knowledge that the mentee wishes to learn

  • Completion of the Mentee Application and other requested documents

  • Ability to participate in the program

  • Completion of required evaluations forms

Project-Based Goals
Each mentoring partnership is asked to identify one project with specific, tangible outcomes and time frames for completion in the time identified. The mentor takes an active role in guiding the mentee in the successful completion of the project. When the mentoring program concludes, the mentee should have developed the skills necessary to represent the project without assistance.

The program participants will attend a introductory meeting or conference call for the kick-off of the program. The date and location of the meeting will be announced at a later date.

CFRE Credits for Mentors
Mentors may submit 1 CFRE point per year in the general volunteer service category to CFRE International to maintain their CFRE certification.  To view more information on the CFRE continuing education, please click here.
