AFP-Greater Philadelphia Chapter
Where we stand, what we believe in this moment

"A riot is the language of the unheard."
---Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., 1968

In recent days, you’ve probably heard the quote from Dr. Martin Luther King’s less publicized speech, “The Other America”. You’ve seen peaceful protests overshadowed by violent rioting. In response to the destruction this quote has appeared on Twitter, on Facebook, in newspapers, and of course, on TV. What most of us have not heard is his question that followed: “What is it that America has failed to hear?”

AFP-Greater Philadelphia Chapter, like many other nonprofits, acknowledges and empathizes with all the victims of America’s racist past and present. While much in the world has changed in the past 65 years, the blatant disregard for Black and Brown lives has not. The difference is that today it is increasingly captured on video and posted on social media for the world to see instantly. The blaming and violent rhetoric hurled at Asian Americans; the deliberate act of dehumanization and marginalizing of Native Americans; the drug-dealing stereotyping of Hispanic Americans and finally, most recently, the indiscriminate, unjustified killing of Black Americans.

Your AFP can do more than empathize.
We must face the uncomfortable and have difficult conversations. We want to address the question, What is it that America has failed to hear?”

For the coming months, our “Community Coffee Conversation” Zoom forums will offer everyone and anyone the opportunity to hear and listen to one another. More information will be forthcoming, but please, mark your calendar:

Thursday, June 25, 9:30-10:30

We hope you will join us to begin the dialogue.
